New Site - stuffandotherthings.com →
So I’ve upgraded the “blog.” The new site is called stuff.and.other.things and will basically be the same as jeffdewolf.com/trivial pursuits. I noticed a lot of people weren’t looking at the sports related posts so I have an option to view the new site “sans sports.” It’s a backdoor thing so I may have to come up with something else for those of you who...

2008 Civil War Football Highlights (w/those U of O cheerleaders everyone seems to love) - This video was made by a Cal fan, who somewhat ironically may have lost the most in this game (if UCLA pulls the stunner). Warning to Beaver fans: do not watch this unless you are a masochist or your name is Evan “E-Dogg Skrilla Killa,” who made the lovely video of the massacre of 2008 between USC...

The best coaching jobs of the season - ESPN →
1. Nick “Satan” Saban - Can’t argue this one. He reminds me of Bobby Knight and I love Bobby Knight. 2. Chris Petersen - Boise State fans keep telling me he’s happy in Boise and won’t leave…just a matter of the right job coming along. Why would you go to a true rebuilding job like Washington when you saw Urban Meyer go to Florida from Utah? 3. Brian Kelly -...

CFB: "Bye Week Wisdom" →
Lots of chatter lately about how bye weeks affect college football teams. This article breaks down some of the games affected by byes lately. I think a team who a) has good coaches and b) is banged up will always benefit from a bye as long as they are at least within range of the opponent talent-wise. Personally I’d like to see the known big games (rivalries mostly) give both teams the same...

Oregon vs. Oregon State (Civil War): Random...
Here are some thoughts on yesterday’s Civil War football game game: Some people may try and convince you one or both of these teams are “good” but both are very mediocre in my opinion and certainly far from “elite.” Whether we as fans want to admit that or not is a different story…the truth hurts. If the Ducks prevail in the Holiday Bowl or the Beavers...

CFB Games to Watch 11/29
No monumental games this week, except maybe the Bedlam game between #3 Oklahoma and #12 Oklahoma State, but there are a lot of great rivalry games and games that will decide some of the tight conference races. 5:00 PM PST Texas A&M at No. 2 Texas ESPN (11/27) 9:00 AM PST West Virginia at No. 25 Pittsburgh ABC (11/28) WVU still has an outside shot at the Big East title but need...

Article on the Samoan quarterbacks for the Ducks and Beavs I’ve been on a partial media blackout this week. When I see a headline that looks as though some spineless “Civil War” rhetoric will be regurgitated I simply pass it over. I think it has as much to do with despising inaccuracy in news (thanks J-School) as it does with the pure negativity of it all. If I want Bill...

GameDay going to Bedlam, not the Civil War?
College GameDay is apparently going to Stillwater, OK for the OU/OSU game instead of coming out west to Corvallis for the Civil War. Obviously this doesn’t affect how big this game is to Oregon State and Oregon fans but it is a nice exclamation point to put on a big game. Here are the reasons they aren’t coming: 1. TV Network: The big reason is whomever made the Versus TV deal pulled...

CFB Games to watch 11/21
The last two weeks have been pretty low key as far as big games but this week’s slate has one great one and a bunch of games that are big in deciding the conference races. 9:00 AM PST Michigan at No. 10 Ohio State ABC Ohio State hoping for a Penn State and/or Oregon State loss. Oh, and to crush their arch rival. 12:00 PM PST Washington at Washington State FSN I’ve been...

ESPN - A look at Pac-10 bowl possibilities -... →
Making bowl predictions is mentally draining (and fun) but this is an OK look. I will say though, Arizona can’t get to the Holiday. Either Oregon State wins out and goes to the Rose (giving Arizona 4 loses to Oregon’s 3 or Cal’s 3) or the winner of the Civil War goes to the Holiday with 2 losses, case closed. Also, Oregon doesn’t play this weekend but can all but clinch* a...

CFB Games to watch 11/13
Not a lot of great football on but still some worth paying attention to. Last week I believe I set a personal record for football watched in one Saturday. I literally began the day with Texas/Baylor and UNC/Georgia Tech around 9am and ended with USC/Cal around 9pm (somewhere in the middle I caught Iowa’s winning field goal, Bama’s OT win, Georgia/Kentucky in a great shootout and I even...

PAC-10 FB Pick-em, week 12
Two elimination games this week with the loser of each being relegated to the Pac-10 Bowl pit of doom. If I do say so myself, and I do, I was pretty acurate with my over/under calls last week. Again, the things I see as important considering each teams strenghts and weaknesses: Oregon State 24 - California 23 Cal’s picks of OSU - 1.5 Rogers Bros. yards from scrimage - 210.5 Total sacks...

There’s been a TON of talk (again) of forming a playoff system in college football. I’m working on a  complete run down of each option but will wait until after all of the regular season games are finished. Why? Almost every argument I’ve heard for a playoff begins with “what if…” Remember, LSU was ranked 7th going into the final regular season weekend last...

Special Comment by KO on Prop. 8 This is good stuff. For the most part I feel politics is a personal choice, but then again, I don’t think this has anything to do with politics. Like Keith I am not gay nor can I even think of anyone I know well who is, and I still find the passing of Proposition 8 mind numbingly deplorable. My main question is why do people care? I personally have no...

Make One Change To The BCS  →
This article asks four experts what one change they would make to the BCS system. My thoughts: Change 1: Make strength of schedule one-quarter of the formula, decrease the human polls to half, and the computers to a fourth. I couldn’t agree more. I love that non-BCS teams play in the BCS but Hawaii did not belong last year and Utah is the only team left that should be considered this...

On College Football / High risk of Rose rematch →
I agree in that a rematch of either Penn. St./Oregon State or Ohio State/USC would be terrible. The best scenario for the Pac-10 is for Oregon State to play Ohio State in the Rose Bowl (Michigan State beating Penn St. in the season finale), leaving the Trojans free for a big match-up between an SEC or Big-12 team.
